"Putting a Halt to Winter Skin Concerns"

When the temperature outside drops and the temperature inside rises, your skin is a target for dryness. Low humidity, coupled with heavier clothing and longer, hotter showers and baths can leave your skin feeling dry and itchy. Your skin is stripped of moisture during the cold winter months, which is why it is so important to seal moisture into the skin to prevent dryness. This is the perfect time of year to adjust your skin care and moisturizing routine.

The skin is made up of several layers of cells and thousands of oil glands. The oil that the glands produce keeps the skin from losing moisture and makes it supple and soft.  However, the skin is in need of a step up, to boost the moisture levels in the winter. Depending on your living environments humidity, you will also want to apply a hydrating masque to help restore suppleness. Drinking enough water daily, and putting a humidifier in your home, will also help prevent dehydration.

One of winter's most profound effects on the skin is to slow the skin renewal process, leaving your complexion looking dull and maybe even a little congested. Bring your skin out of hibernation with an exfoliation treatment.  Another tip for dehydrated skin, is to spray a mist over face throughout the day as needed to hydrate your skin.  (Pour some purified water into a pump bottle that has a fine mist sprayer) Also, if you are suddenly noticing fine lines around the eye area? Don't be alarmed, chances are good that they are the result of dehydration, and can be alleviated by a little extra moisture. I have provided some tips to get you through the winter months.

Winter Tips to Safegaurd Your Face:

  • ·                    Wash your face with lukewarm, not hot, water.

  • ·                    Avoid using facial soaps. Stay with a cleanser that has a balanced ph level.

  • ·                    Continue using a sunscreen of at least SPF 15.

  • ·                    Be careful to not overuse products containing alpha-hydroxy acids. They exfoliate the top layer of skin, which is good for dry skin, but they leave the new layer of skin unprotected to the bitter winds.

  • ·                    Don't forget to protect your lips. Use a lip balm containing an SPF in it.

  • ·                    Treat yourself to a home mini facial!

Winter Body Basics:

  • ·                    Bathe or shower in lukewarm water. Hot water removes natural oils from the skin, making it dry and itchy.

  • ·                    Try to limit your showers to 10-15 minutes.

  • ·                    Add bath oils to your water if taking a bath.

  • ·                    Use mild soaps. Try to avoid deodorant soaps, as they can be more drying to the skin.

  • ·                    Apply moisturizers immediately after bath or shower. This allows the moisturizer to soak into the skin, while the skin is still damp.

  • ·                    Shave using hair conditioner or lotion instead of shaving foam.

  • ·                    Apply petroleum jelly to problem areas to seal in moisture and heal very dry skin.

  • ·                    After washing your hands, immediately put on  a hand cream to seal in moisture.
