Life After
by Shelly Williams, Miss Rodeo America 1999

With four perfectly even white socks and a blaze of knowledge evenly spread down the middle of her face Ravana became the teacher of lessons for an eager 12 year old girl.  Until then I had very little horse sense and certainly none of it was formal but together in the summer of ’87 Ravana and I joined a riding group called Eh-Capa. Now this wasn’t just any riding group, these were kids about (36 of them) who rode their horses without any tack at all. No saddle, no bridle nothing- but a thin, leather strap called a tack rein around the horses’ neck for control.  Now you can imagine a young girl with little horseback experience and a grouchy 12 year-old mare trying to master the technique of riding tossed right in the midst of 3 dozen other children a horseback.  It could have been an accident waiting to happen but something strange took place instead. I formed a bond with this little horse that no one could believe.  In no time we were not only position leaders in the drill but we excelled to the jump team and liberty (no tack rein either) teams as well.  Don’t get me wrong Ravana still was a pill when it came to others and pinned her ears flat back at the sound of my grandmother’s voice.  But the two of us, we had an understanding an agreement of sorts. She was my horse and I was her rider and together we were in heaven.
