Photogenics... What
is it all about?
Just because you’re the prettiest girl in the
pageant, doesn’t mean you will automatically win this category. Yes,
it does help and plays a huge part, but there is more to it than Just
a pretty face.
Some
pageants, especially nationals, will choose, “Miss Photogenic” from
photos taken throughout the
Week
opposed to the photo you sent in. So be on the lookout for, Mr.
Photographer at all times, and put on
that winning smile. If you’re not having a good time or you’re in a
bad mood, it will show. You’ve heard The
saying, “Pictures don’t lie.” You can let your guard down after
you’re in the room, but stay energized and
full of enthusiasm while in the public eye. That rule applies also in
front of the chaperones. You will Be
surprised how much input the chaperones have with the judges and
director.
Now
that we have discussed the inner beauty, lets discuss the outer self.
What
are you wearing?
Black or white is a good choice unless it’s going to
be a color portrait. Why, you ask. If you wear a colored outfit for a
black and white photo, the picture tends to look dull. It doesn’t have
that crisp look to it. If you wear a black outfit on a white background,
it will look rich and jump out of the
Photo.
Be careful not to wear too much jewelry or high collar shirts with
conchos, etc…
You want to show off
your facial features, not hide them.
A big favorite is a V-neckline. If
you have a long neck, however, this
would not be a wise choice.
Watch
those hands. The days of placing your finger against your face and
tipping your hat are gone.
This
is a bust photo, not a finger photo.
Is
your hat shaped with current trends?
Is your hat shaped correctly?
Is
the crown too tall or the brim off?
Is your
hat too wide for your face?
Print a photo off the
website of a state or national queen, that
has the current trend, and take it to the western store or whoever
shapes your hat to have it done correctly.
Trying to describe to someone how it should look is sometimes a lot
harder than you bargain for,
especially if that person is not a pro at shaping hats.
Background.
If you’re wearing black, have a light background. That seems simple
enough, but you would be
surprised how many photos I see with contrasting backgrounds. The
same goes for busy back-grounds.
Yes, it is nice to have the American flag waving behind you, but its
taking away from you.
It’s
too busy. You want to stand out of the photo, not blend in with the
forest.
Makeup.
The bright lights will wash you out. It’s always a good idea to wear
your makeup a shade darker.
Don’t
forget that neck. We wouldn’t want a line across you jaws now would
we. You will want to accent your cheeks, eyes, and lips. If you have a
wide nose, take a brown eye pencil and draw 2 lines vertically Down
both sides of your nose and rub with your finger up and down slightly.
This will give an illusion of
your nose appearing slimmer. You can do the same for your cheeks. Draw a
line below your cheekbone With
a lip liner and run with your finger upward, then apply your blush. This
will make your cheeks appear Fuller
and more predominant. I
could go on and on about makeup, but that is another story.
The most
important thing to remember is to smile, smile, smile, and be natural about it.
Have fun.
