KNOWING YOUR JUDGES Who are the judges? Attempting to find out who your judges are has to be one of the most popular questions asked at the beginning of a pageant. Why? What difference does it make who they are, when all you can do is your best. Knowing your judges background, experience, hobbies, and job occupation could and will give you that extra edge. For example, you are competing at a pageant and one of your judges is a rodeo announcer. What does that tell you? First of all, you better know what the announcers name is. I was at a pageant where the announcer judged horsemanship, and asked one of the girls over the microphone who the rodeo announcer was, and she didnt know. She definitely didnt score many points that day. Rodeo announcers will usually want to see how knowledgeable you are about the sport of rodeo and ask about the leading cowboys in an event, stock contractor, clown, or they may want you to explain a rodeo event, as if you were the announcer at the rodeo. Other judges to look for are former queens, sponsors, horse trainers, veterinarians, rodeo contestants, business people, roundup club members, pageant chaperones. What about those silent judges? Keep in mind, you never know who might be judging. If you ask the director, before the pageant, what kind of judges they will have, be sure you explain to them that you are just helping yourself prepare for that type of judge. Your not doing it to be nosy! Not all directors will give you this information, but if you can get it, you will be more prepared and ready for the judges, and the type of questions they should ask. Knowing about your judges will also help you in casual conversation when you are talking to them. Remember, people like to talk about themselves, so ask about their hobbies. GOOD LUCK!!!!! |
